![]() When we first moved to Nyack 23 years ago, Nyack Center was to us a place for fundraisers, sometimes movies and an occasional party. But as we grew into Nyack, really becoming a part of the community, we learned Nyack Center’s true value. Nyack Center, as the tagline created by one of the founders, Jane Sherman succinctly states, is not just a community building, but a place for building community. It is place that takes care of its residents in so many ways. When we think of the ideal place to live, we think of a community that cares about each other and works to create a society that is inclusive and welcoming to all. At Nyack Center, this dream is realized every day. From taking care of the youth through before and after school programs, special events and parties, teen drop-in nights and more to creating a space for dialogue, learning and just plain fun for adults and families. Nyack Center does it all. Nyack is a safe haven for everyone in our community. It is always incredible to us how much Nyack Center does with so little -- so little staff and so little funding. They are all truly amazing! I am sure that there are people in Nyack who have never set foot in Nyack Center and for them we feel a bit sad. Nyack Center really is the center of Nyack and we hope that everyone will take the opportunity of Nyack Center’s 25th anniversary to stop in and check it out! Elizabeth Chapman & Bill Munn Nyack Center Legacy Honorees 2013 Nyack Center is celebrating 25 years of service to our community this year. ![]() Bright Shining Faces Last week I spent some time with our new kindergartners. What fresh shining faces! We read stories, discussed teachers and adult ambitions – policeman, fireman, teacher - the usual stuff for 5 year olds. One boy, B, very seriously said he wanted to read and ride motorbikes when he grew up. Great combination! Thank God I thought, that the Nyack Center provides a safe, loving, supervised place for these children to be while their parents are finishing the workday. The Nyack Center’s After School Program is the lowest cost in Rockland County. 98% of children who attend our After School Program are from working families living at or below the Federal Guidelines for poverty – most could not afford anything else. The Nyack Center also serves as a hub of information, support and community to help all families and children achieve their dreams. Where the school playing field is somewhat leveled, and where boys like B can grow into the thoughtful intellectual rebels they are. The Board of Directors appreciates all the community support over the past 25 years, and we look forward to at least 25 more. ![]() Everyone feels welcome at the Nyack Center, making it a special place where a diverse population crosses paths. Nyack is fortunate to have it. In addition to being the location of our film screenings, the Nyack Center is also home to the small office of Rivetown Film Society; so I’ve seen countless people pass through for programs and activities, from young afterschool children who arrive and leave with big smiles, to teenagers who make it their second home, to seniors enjoying a holiday meal and singing together, and to people participating in all kinds of meetings and cultural events. I often wonder where these people, programs and events would go if there was no Nyack Center. For many, there is no other place, and no place better. Visual artists, musicians, poets, actors and arts organizations all benefit from space and support that the Nyack Center board and staff provide. Years, before I joined the Nyack Center board, when I organized my first Flash Sketch Mob in 2012, the Nyack Center delivered crucial support. Students from their after-school program helped organize the event, the bell tower signaled the beginning and the end of the public art making session and the parking lot in the rear and the steps in front served as the staging area for the 100 artists that participated.
Here are some of the other cultural programs and annual events that have been nurtured by the Nyack Center: Rivertown Film Operating from a basement office in the Nyack Center, Rivertown Film Society screens features in the auditorium that include discussions with the film makers after the screening. Nyack Center Figure Drawings Since 2011, artists gather every Thursday to draw from live models. The sessions are organized by prominent courtroom artists and illustrator, and former Nyack Center board member, Janet Hamlin. Made by Hand On November 13, 2015, nearly 50 artists and crafts people will participate in this annual holiday gift fair. Music And Reading in a Holiday Spirit For the last 21 years, local performing artists and notables give holiday readings and provide musical gifts. This year’s program will be held on December 13. For artists, audiences, and students, Nyack Center is a place where creativity and culture intersect with community. In recognition of this role, the Nyack Art Collective will honor the Nyack Center’s 25 anniversary on First Friday, September 4. The theme of their monthly exhibit at Prohibition River will be "Celebrate Nyack" and 50% of the proceeds of any sale will go to the Nyack Center. The opening reception will be at Prohibition River, 82 Main Street from 8-10p. Bill Batson is an activist, artist, writer and member of Nyack Center's Board of Directors.
