The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King wrote: "The beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold." The Nyack Center has been cultivating this beauty of brotherhood and peace for a quarter century. The center has been the Nyack NAACP's meeting place for many of those years. The center has always been a welcoming place, providing our organization with a home not only for the adults but for our youth as well. Committed to justice for all, the center has served our organization with a shelter in times of storm. We are profoundly grateful for this place of brotherhood, peace and justice. The centers value to the Nyack NAACP is priceless.

When Nyack Center began, it held promise that it would serve the underprivileged of our community in an age spectrum from pre-school to seniors.
As years ensued, the services and programs engaged my family and me, as well: concerts; dramatic readings; community meetings; creative writing workshops; poetry jams; Friday night music; “Men who Cook”; and rallies for causes meaningful to me. The Center opened its doors to the Nyack Rotary Club for its holiday lunch and gift-giving for seniors; and for many after school reading programs. I have recently had an opportunity to give back in a small way, by participating in the creation of a state of the art recording studio. The Center is Nyack’s unified core - its heart and soul. There is one community for all who choose to participate. And Nyack Center has been instrumental in making it so. Jan Degenshein, Community Leader and award winning architect, planner and poet. Too many times in our lives we look for instant gratification, be it going to Starbucks for a coffee or watching our favorite team (the Yankees) win a game. But other times we have to understand that it takes time build greatness and we must be willing to push out instant results for long term success. And I think that Nyack Center is just such a place, it serves as a cornerstone to what we hold so dear; our children. Raising a child is lesson in patience. When we look back and we wonder where the time has gone. They go from a tiny child we hold in our hands to dropping them off to college, but in those 18 years we spend countless hours ensuring there grow into good people. Most of us only do that for our children, but the Nyack Center does it for all of our children. They ensure that the children in our community are fed and nurtured. They have a multitude of programs to help each child that walks through the doors providing a feeling of safety and love. They are taught to respect and to help others. They are provided food and help to ensure their success in school and their lives after they have graduated. In an all too familiar quote “Children are our Future” and the Nyack Center helps all us and our collective future. The Nyack Center is truly a gem in our community to be treasured just as we treasure our own children. Peter Lang Upper Nyack |
